Student teams from Al Yamamah University took part in the 15th Inter-College Environmental Public Speaking Competition, organized by the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) in Dubai, on November 25-26, 2015. Participants included students from 57 universities from nine GCC and MENA region countries. Students competed in four environmentally focused categories. For the second year in a row, the INTERLINK/AL Yamamah students emerged as finalists in several categories. Two teams came in as First Place in two of the four categories, and one of these teams took Second Place Overall.
Abdullah Mohammed Alajlan gave an engaging and thought-provoking presentation on the topic “Sustainability Our Responsibility: It Is Not an Option.” Throughout the presentation he described his learning journey, how he came to understand that sustainability is our responsibility, the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals recently launched by the UN (to replace the Millennium Goals), and the World’s Largest Lesson (to teach those goals to 7 billion people in 7 days). Abdullah was the First Place winner in his category and the Third Overall winner.
Maram Mohammed Falatah’s presentation was very powerful and effective. Speaking to the tempo of background music and a beautifully and skillfully designed video background, Maram spoke about the balance between environmental regulation and economic integration. Her eloquence, confidence, and fluency distinguished her as a very strong public speaker. Maram very capably took the trophy and First Place in her category.
Leean Abdulrahman Alhussain put together a well-prepared presentation on the topic “Overpopulation vs. Overconsumption: Where Should We Focus?.” She spoke eloquently and illustrated how overpopulation is a myth that rests on the rationalization of consumption behavior.
The teams were coached by Asaad Al Asaad and Alla Kweider.
